In 2009, the Smith’s Food & Drug Stores charitable giving program—known as Neighbor to Neighbor—touched 2,050 organizations through cash and in-kind contributions totaling $10 million, or on average $75,000 per store. The total includes combined support from Smith’s and its parent company Kroger Co, alliances with suppliers and the generous assistance from associates and customers.
In 2009 Smith’s reached a landmark in community support by reaching an annual fundraising total of $1 million for Primary Children’s Medical Center, a regional children’s hospital with the distinction of being one of only a handful of Trauma One hospitals in the nation. Many weeks of associates’ in-store fundraising and special events coupled with a supplier focused golf tournament generated that incredible result.
Many of Smith’s 13,000 associates help grass roots organizations by participating in races and walks, serving at food pantries, mentoring youth, donating to the annual Associate Giving Campaign or by participating in a host of other causes that personally inspire them.
Smith’s believes in being a good neighbor to the communities we all share. We celebrated being recognized on National Philanthropy Day with the 2009 Corporate Spirit of Giving Award by the Utah Nonprofit Association.
Smith’s focuses philanthropic support in these key areas:
Hunger Relief, K-12 Education, Women’s Health and Sustainability Efforts.
