Bringing Hope to the Table

Smith’s holiday Gift of Giving program generated donations for most-needed food items for communities of all sizes. Daily store donations of fresh, yet unsalable dairy, meat produce and bakery items from Smith’s stores to local major food banks created 2.2 million meals for people who otherwise would go hungry and diverting 2.9 million pounds of food from landfills. Checks written to food banks for equipment purchases and program support totaled $145,000.

Giving Hope a Hand

Smith’s sponsorships of the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure events in New Mexico, Montana, Southern Nevada and Utah helped to generate tens of thousands of dollars for local breast cancer awareness programs in those communities. In Las Vegas stores, associates went the extra mile to host the Pretty in Pink survivors’ hospitality tent by serving breakfast and giving each survivor special gifts.

K-12 Education

Smith’s Earn & Learn funded more than 1,000 participating schools with $1 million distributed in 2010. In the few areas where Earn & Learn is not offered, $57,000 in gift cards and cash supported schools’ needs as requested. Scholarships for seniors pursuing education beyond high school were provided through Smith’s personal Best Scholarship Program in partnership with Clark County Public Education Foundation. And Smith’s made five scholarships possible for teens in New Mexico through the Martin Luther King Multicultural Council.

Local Organizations

For the second year, Smith’s associates, customers and vendors partnered in activities that resulted in $1 million for the charity care program at Primary Children’s Medical Center, a Trauma One regional children’s hospital. Sponsorship of the Las Vegas Lied Children’s Discovery Museum grocery store exhibit for the 11th year engaged children in the lessons of good nutrition and the prevention of food-borne illness through hand washing.
